How To Accomplish Supply Chain Optimization

By Jennifer Wagner

Running a successful company does not come easy. One has to take care of so many practices and parameters to ensure profitability. Among the crucial things is the chain of supply. This concatenation comprises of several elements that are coordinated to ensure that products move from the manufacturer to the end users. These factors include people, processes, information, resources, activities and technology. Supply chain optimization requires the transformation of natural resources and raw materials into finished products that are delivered to various customers.

Optimization of the supply chain is the application of tools and processes to ensure that the production and distribution operations are maximized. It includes things such as minimization of operating costs and ideal placement of inventory within the system. These operating expenses include transportation, distribution and manufacturing expenditure. The application of mathematical modelling processes is paramount during such endeavors. This system is aimed at delivering goods to end users at the highest profit and least total cost possible. Therefore, apart from trading off inventory, conveyance, manufacturing and distribution costs, one also has to optimize storage using product package size.

Due to changes in the business community, the supply system has also had to evolve with time. For instance, a few decades back, the chain was an internal component of the organization. With the introduction of propagation of computer networking, modern technologies and internet tools, the series evolved into a complex external component comprising of an ecosystem of people, processes and machinery.

With the current globalization trend, it is crucial that one views his or her company as an international entity with global opportunities and needs. This view especially comes in handy when dealing with procurement of products and services to be delivered to customers. The businessperson has to plan for all elements of the supply to ensure that they are optimized. Despite the holistic view, investment should be maintained on a local scale.

Many entrepreneurs embark on several activities and end up spreading their resources thin. This approach will only overwhelm the available resource and cause under performance. A better approach would be to focus on your principal strengths and outsource for others. One should always consider the option of relying on third party specialists to carry out routine tasks.

Optimization of the supply also requires demand information based forecasting and inventory control. To achieve the latter, one must ensure improved collaboration between the different parties involved in this system. Cooperation between the producer or supplier and retailer is very paramount here. Enhanced collaboration promotes products availability, fulfillment rates and elimination of redundant elements.

Mobile based technology has become a critical business tool. A company must embrace this trend to be able to take advantage of cost effective operations when carrying out marketing, field sales, merchandising and direct provision of services. Through using this tool, businesses can share data on product content, origin, sustainability, provenance and many other things.

The mechanism should also be able to respond to changes in its environment. So many things can change in the business environment over time. Your chain should be responsive enough to sense these changes and pick on the new trends. Sales, service level and reposition inventory are some of the common variables.
