Improving Motor Skills In Children With Play Therapy Training

By John Graham

Almost all functioning ability in humans is learned after birth. This is why play therapy training has become an important factor in improving motor skills in children makes the other systems efficient as well. Motor means movement or the ability of correct movement made possible by muscle strength. In the child develop motor skills are noticed on toddlers of age groups zero to 3 by movement of feet, grasping of an object and pulling.

These are categorized in fine and gross motor skills; Gross motor skills are the main movement of limbs like walking, crawling, jumping and running. Which is also the use of large muscle composition. While fine motor skills involve the movement of toes, fingers and wrist joints. There are many different reasons why some children are not the same level in the development chart with peers.

When a child is past the development milestone and still struggles or is not even attempting the physical ability as expected, it may or not be DOD. The pediatric doctors in the field would not quickly rule any slow motor skill development as DOD, but rather give prescribed therapy and ways to improve child s physical skills.

Boys compared to girls skills development, pay attention to what excites the child more and avoid any discouraging or unfavoured time of play otherwise find an alternative or incorporate other interests. Improving is the enhancement of already existing abilities rather than starting from zero. Using the child strength to counter for the weaknesses; choose the best time when the mood is good and not overdo training session at a time.

While also the failure to recognize a child s needs in time would mean a prolonged cognition ability. Just because of the chance of possible slow development in a child it must not be left too long without asking for a second professional opinion. Where there is brain cognitive failure a different approach is needed which may need medical treatment and supplements. In both cases however the sense of touch can help in stimulating brain function.

Remember it is not a disability for a child but own unique growth rate, if there is any concern can be ruled out by a visit to the pediatrician or raised by a physician during milestone charting visits and immunizations. At 12 months the child normally starts pulling up to sitting and standing positions. Walking chairs may be introduced to aid movement but must not be entirely dependent on such assisting or support tools.

It is at this stage also when the baby would start imitating what is done by others even in speech. At 14 months encourage baby to use hands and utensils for feeding. Selecting child-friendly soft cutlery with fun colors for a child to be familiar with and get excited at seeing it.

At 2 years plus include more fine motor skills like cutting paper, playing with dough and writing utensils. It is important to monitor children at play always, to avoid getting hurt and other children as well while keeping the environment playful and fun. While 3 years of kindergarten age is perfect for Lego toys to improve fine motor and also color and shape recognition.
