The Ideal Length Of An Online Video

By Gabby Morris

I love going out and creating videos, however when it comes to editing them that is always the hardest part, cutting out unnecessary parts of the project. I tend to make the videos too long, forgetting that they need to be as concise as possible so that people stay interested and entertained. Because when I think about it, I have a very short attention span for online videos, if they do not entertain me quickly then they get turned off or I find another more interesting one to watch. Its very easy to think that this would not happen with your own video, but unfortunately of course it does.

What I need to learn is that my content is more likely to be watched in its entirety if it's a bite-sized and palpable video. I was looking at some statistics, the average attention span in 2012 was just 8 seconds. So in order for a video to gain views, it must be regularly punctuated with something that will grab the viewers attention and regain their interest.

Just to point out that the average attention span of a goldfish is apparently 9 seconds, so next time someone tells you that you have the attention span of a goldfish, the correct answer is "thank you". One I can certainly believe is the statistic that office workers on average check their email 30 times an hour. But here's the important one if you're a regular uploader, the average length watched of an internet view was just 2.7 minutes. So if you're producing 30 minute long programs, the chances are no-one is watching the whole this. Unless it's incredibly gripping, and even then - 30 minutes? Snore! I could be doing more productive things with my time, like checking my emails.

The video blog reinforces the value of the duration of your video because duration puts individuals off. People want to watch something which will be worth the minutes as opposed to waste their time. There have been a lot of times when I have been trying to find videos and came across a 10-20 minute video and have not bothered to watch it due to its duration. The content might be extremely helpful and entertaining, but the length simply puts me off, and I know I am not alone here. Therefore, it is key to respect peoples precious time and make an effort to produce something shorter. The video proposes around 90 - 100 seconds to be a good length. This for me personally seems daunting because that is not a lot of time at all, and I personally want to showcase and show off what I have made because I am proud of it. Nonetheless, that is not the point, the point is for the audience to watch it and not switch off.

Keeping videos shorter means that you have to keep things more concise, therefore don't be scared of cutting content out. Its scary, but necessary. After all this is the digital age, so it is very easy to make another video with additional content in. Additionally at the end of your video, do not forget to put a call to action. For instance, subscribing on YouTube would be strongly recommended, but it could just be links to your blog, or a method of communication.

I found this video blog very beneficial in helping decide how long a online video should be, so the key points to remember are an introduction to ensure the target audience will stay interested and continue watching, the duration of the video, and also not to be afraid of cutting anything out!
