A LinkedIn Networking Strategy Involves The Right Engagement

By Betty Butler

Many job seekers and career changers have misconceptions about how social media is to be used for opportunities. While there are many apps on the market with various features, having more than a few active accounts can be counteractive to a job search. Using a LinkedIn networking strategy that uses all elements of business fundamentals can help a person stand out and meet individuals that have a positive impact on their career growth.

While this may sound complex, or at least a lot of labor, the truth is it is one of the most effective career search methods to come around in a long time. It starts with a good portfolio that has clear images of the account owner and goes on to list work history and relevant credentials. However, this is not like creating the typical resume.

This online portfolio allows the account owner to highlight areas of accomplishment or add things like certification links or PDF properties that may be of interest to prospective employers. Not everyone can do this with a hard copy resume because sometimes a single page is suggested and it may not fit. Having this online real estate allows a person to show off in a positive manner.

Some users feel obligated to connect with every person that comes up on their suggested feed but this is not mandatory. These are merely suggestions that are based on things like industry, education, other affiliations, or location. Before hitting that connect button, taking time to read a profile to see if there are any interest points. This is a lot better than having hundreds of connections but not having a conversation with even half of these individuals.

Those who like to peruse all social media conversations should use a filter and make it a point to participate in active discussions. While some conversations or posts may have some juicy content, remaining professional will pay a great return. Never give into negative speculation, gossip, or any information that may be considered confidential.

Sometimes, if a person can give insightful information about a company without coming off as a complainer or snitch, this may resonate with the right people. No one knows for certain what type of person might be watching who is saying what so posting etiquette is really important. It just helps to have a friendly, if not informative, presence.

Sometimes when in doubt, going with the premium option can pay off. It allows users to see who is viewing their profile and make more connections. While it may not pay off for a generalist, any freelancer with a specialty will find this gives them an advantage over direct solicitation or using outsourcing sites.

Having a defined purpose can make this process a lot easier. Because there are so many features on this site, knowing where a person is at the present or future goals, will help to narrow the path and develop a routine. Since this is a marketing tool, visiting at least twice a week is recommended. This can be to get company information, follow up on a position, or add new people to a network.
